Sarah Palin the Socialist?

Pretty brilliant argument.

I can't say it better than this week's New Yorker:

"For her part, Sarah Palin, who has lately taken to calling Obama 'Barack the Wealth Spreader,' seems to be something of a suspect character herself. She is, at the very least, a fellow-traveller of what might be called socialism with an Alaskan face. The state that she governs has no income or sales tax. Instead, it imposes huge levies on the oil companies that lease its oil fields. The proceeds finance the government’s activities and enable it to issue a four-figure annual check to every man, woman, and child in the state."

[...]

A few weeks before she was nominated for Vice-President, she told a visiting journalist—Philip Gourevitch, of this magazine—that “we’re set up, unlike other states in the union, where it’s collectively Alaskans own the resources. So we share in the wealth when the development of these resources occurs.”

Perhaps there is some meaningful distinction between spreading the wealth and sharing it (“collectively,” no less), but finding it would require the analytic skills of Karl the Marxist.

My new favorite blog Margaret and Helen is written by two old ladies, best friends from childhood.
It is a hoot. Here is a quote:

Fact: Sarah Palin is stupid. Maybe not stupid by Alabama standards but stupid enough that she managed to get herself elected Governor while never bothering to educate herself on little things like the Constitution, foriegn affairs or appropriate debating practices. She is stupid enough to have accepted a VP nomination for which she is completely unqualified and stupid enough not to admit it - even though the future of our great nation could be irreversibly damaged by the decision.

Alvarez Has Huge Money Lead In State's Attorney Race

It’s clearly nice to be a Democrat in Cook County. After winning the primary as a rookie unknown, Alvarez has received at least $126,650 from political players and groups like incumbent state’s attorney Dick Devine

Early voting in Los Angeles CA: If butterfly ballots in Florida where confusing this is like deciphering the Da vince Code in order to vote.

The whole city of Los Angeles has a total of ONE place for early voting; let me repeat that, one of the largest city in America (pop. 4 million) has one lonely place for early voting. It gets better, the place is at Norwalk, CA. 40 minute drive from my place, although with moderate traffic is about 1 hour.

I got there around 3:30PM. It's a massive public building with a lot going on, the early voting thing appears to be of low priority. One of many other public functions the building serves.
The line is going around the building (the size of a small city block). After asking about 3 different people I found a form to fill and went to the end of the aforementioned line.
I followed the line, turned the corner and keep going, turned another corner and I saw the end of it.

A baby boomer African-American lady is in front of me, I started a mini-rant, "I can't believe this is the only way to vote early, what is the plan? How can this not be on purpose? This is a fig leave to claim they have early voting?. The lady seems sympathetic to my rant, and in a determined but calm tone, she says, "It's OK, they are just trying to discourage us, we just need to keep at it". That sounded a bit conspirational to me but at that point
I was thinking about leaving. It didn't seem like I was going to make it to the front of the cue in one hour and half.

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7DRZyjYUuEUaDYbDnmVofAEptXC0RBH8iRb3Cv6HIvYlBSFE8pia5MxF2F2POMbwqGGEvVKXWdyXG9fkGmljVwcHIMUGa91FZNexHjEbOzZHwWABFBKwPhKhO6woySYxl8C34eZttXzM8/s320/voting+lines+1.jpg
The people waiting in line were -I'd say- about half African-Americans the rest were minorities and women. I think I spotted one white male (hipster looking guy). I don't think I would had notice any of this -it's LA after all- except that I was trying to guess what percentage may be voting for Obama, the white-male dude didn't strike me as a McCainiac, but who knows.

I got to the front of the line at about 4:56pm. They were letting people in 10 at a time, every 8 minutes or so. I was 3rd in line for the next group of 10. I wasn't sure of what would happen if 5 PM struck and I was waiting in line. If they try to send me back home after one and half hours of waiting in line I was getting ready to raise hell. Mercifully, the policy is to let anybody who is in line at 5 PM vote.

They called the next 10, I went in, we had been waiting outside the building, we kind of raced in, the way shoppers do for an early Macy's sale. It is a huge building with teller windows a la DMV and we didn't know where to go. Somehow, somebody knew to go to the 3rd floor. There was a sign on letter sized paper in a font not bigger than 24 that reassure us we where going the right way.
We hop in the elevator. Once in the 3rd floor, there were better signs and poll workers milling around. We went through a few hallways, and ended on a DMV style waiting room. Everything looked very crowed even though it was only 10 of us coming in. There is no way they can handle a big turnout with this kind of crowd management.

I handed in the form, was not asked for ID, (I brought my Passport just in case), and was given and number. I went to the DMVish benches sat and waited for about 15 or 20 minutes.
My number was called and a plastic envelope was handed out to me, I verify the info on my envelope and followed my fellow suffrager down another hallway where they had set up tall plastic cheap looking mini-desk with cardboard visors on 3 sides (I assume that is to preserve the secrecy of the vote) along the side of a hallway. It looked clearly improvised and a bit chaotic.

Where are the machines? Where are the levers? Am I in the right place? That is all it was, a plastic desk. I emptied the contents of the plastic envelope I was handed and realized that that was the total of my voting equipment. a punch card with numbers and little bubbles that I needed to fill precisely (presumably) in order to make my card reflect my intentions.

If butterfly ballots in Florida where confusing this is like deciphering the Da vince Code in order to vote.

Soon enough some lady said "How do I do this, I am from the South and we have machines there." I pipped "Hey, I'm from NY and we have machines
there also.” There was a good deal of confusion. Two very nice helpful ladies (poll workers) where running around answering questions.https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmNDelmj-UjpaGDnKxxWLP7ReLmwhisDExZ0a6o2QX1fcSTlz5tdqNq1fUOZX8xfx0spn4ash2fem5YCXJNZNdGFJaE8C5N_c5EPROD76kDWY4ejAABLAQeQoTd-G0Bi3HI__lvNQ2V6cH/s200/Ballot+2.jpg
I bet that at least a quarter of the ballots don't reflect the intentions of the voter accurately.
I had to take a picture of it. I read the instructions with great attention and I figured how to put my ballot back together, what envelope goes where, what tab do I tear, what do I leave blank and so on. Then I casted my ballot, hoping I did it right.
I left the voting place at 5:30pm, sat two hours in traffic and after a total of about 5 hours I Voted! I think.

Overall I think the people on the ground running the early voting process are doing a fairly good job, they have a lot of poll workers and it was run
well, despite great obstacles put in place by upper management. The lady in the line may have been right "they're trying to discourage us"

As seen on the far-right blogs

Michelle Malkin's blog

Sorry, I totally dislike his politics, but there’s no reason to stoop to the level of the people who trashed Palin’s family.

Yeah, that loser McAmnesty said that Reverand Wright is off limits because “we are better than that”. And he is going to lose the election. The hell with all you nice conservatives. This should have been a war, but instead it was a whimper.

I hope McAmnesty can pull it off, and Palin gets a shot at the presidency within a month of the swearing in…

Sarah Palin is here to stay

The damage done to the country by John McCain with the selection of Sarah Palin is going to unravel in years to come. The consequences of this misjudgment will not end on Nov 4 if by Obama winning the election.

Palin is not going anywhere, even if McCain losses, it is safe to say that McCain will be out politics by the next decade. Palin, in the other hand, is here to stay for decades. Whether McCain wins or not, Palin becomes a de facto candidate for the GOP nomination of 2012. Add to that a conservative movement that will get energize by being on the opposition and it is clear that Palin will be a force to be reckon with.

The conservative movement is far from dead, it is just taking his cues from the DowJones index and it is a bit less ebullient, but far from gone.

You can twitch in disgust as you said it, but Sarah Palin has an undeniable folksy common touch, she is fun to watch. Whether it comes from a genuine place or not can be debated. The fact is she has it, she is only going to get better at it and this is a very effective tool in the arsenal of any politician. Joe Liberman could use the traces of common touch that Sarah leaves of her stool, for example.

Democrats don't win elections Republicans loose them. Don't forget that the selection of Sara Paling brought the McCain ticket from 10 behind to a 2 points lead. Only the crash of Wall Street brought the race to where it is now. This is not that different from the mid-term election of 06. You can argue that that election was lost by Mark Foley pedophilic tendencies and Larry Craig’s thirst for anonymous gay sex on the public stool of an airport (It is hard to concocted a more sordid story). Those two event weeks before the election discouraged enough conservatives to give the win to the Democrats

This country is essentially a right to center country, dare I say, a conservative country. I will repeat this; Liberals never win elections. Clinton didn't win his first term, Ross Perot pouched enough Republicans to hand the election to Clinton. Clinton won a second term by stealing the Conservative agenda and implementing it much more effectively than any Republican has done in the last 4 decades. Balancing the budget, shrinking well-fare roles, and increasing prestige and respect on the international arena. He played the conservative dance and was reward it accordingly.

Obama has a lead by appealing to conservatives that would go back to their ingrained bias at the first opportunity.

In four more years Sarah Palin’s main weakness, lack of experience, will have evaporated, just by virtue of sticking around for that long. All she needs to do now is sit pretty, (who says that pageant experience is not useful in politics?) and take the party from McCain, her unenthusiastic mentor, who put her on the map of National and International politics. This will fit neatly in the pattern of her career. (The GOP will see a battle for the soul of the party on a Bush-Palin struggle no dissimilar to the Clinton-Obama struggle of the DNC of the last 2 years.)

She uses her mentors and then discards them. The list of discarded mentors is surprisingly long for somebody with such a short career. John Stein former mayor of Wasilla helped launch her career. for example. Council member Nick Carney who is quoted saying "I called Sarah's campaign for mayor the end of the age of innocence in Wasilla," was also among her early mentors.

There was a knife-sharp, personal edge to Palin's campaign that many locals found disturbing, particularly because of the warm relationship between Palin and Stein before the race.

Other member of the discarded list included the recently prosecuted Senator of Alaska Ted Stevens. How long before John McCain is added to this list?

According to some political observers in Alaska, this pattern -- exploiting "old-boy" mentors and then turning against them for her own advantage -- defines Sarah Palin's rise to power. Again and again, Palin has charmed powerful political patrons, and then rejected them when it suited her purposes. She has crafted a public image as a clean politics reformer, but in truth, she has only blown the whistle on political corruption when it was expedient for her to do so. Above all, Palin is a dynamo of ambition, shrewdly maneuvering her way through the notoriously compromised world of Alaska politics, making and breaking alliances along the way

McCain has created a monster that will devour any legacy he may have hoped to leave behind. I can envision McCain losing this election, getting his soul back, realizing the huge mistake he has made and spending the sunset of his career fighting the monsters he created. McCain is already giving clear signs that he is uneasy as described by NBC News Political Director Chuck Todd in an interview to air this week.

Of the four candidates in the ticket, Sarah Palin has a great hand to play, the possibilities are wide open ahead of her. Obama in the other hand if victorious will inherit a royal mess. Within 2 week of inauguration the GOP will make him responsible of the disastrous economy and not matter what he does in Iraq he will be accused of the whole boondoggle. McCain will have to come to terms with the fact that he is never going to be president and Biden will be Biden.

So let’s make room for Sarah Palin, she is here to stay.
